With reference to your despatch No 27 of the 16th,
February last on the subject of the employment of German
agents by British Insurance Companies doing business in the
Far East, I have the honour to forward herewith copy of a
despatch which I addressed to His Majesty's Consuls- General
at Shanghai, Tientsin, Canton and Hankow. together with copies
of two despatches in reply received from Shanghai and Tientsin
respectively.
The information contained in the despatch from His
Majesty's Consul-General at Tientsin appears to me to be
especially significant of the importance attached by the
German authorities to the retention by their nationals of
British Insurance Agencies in China.
